Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about downloading, licensing and installing free fonts.
Are the fonts on Free Font Universe really free to download?
Yes. Every font in our catalog is free to download. Free to download does not always mean free for every use, so check each font's own license before using it commercially.
Can I use these fonts for commercial projects?
It depends on the individual font. Many fonts are free for personal use but require a paid license for commercial work. Open the License or readme link on the font's page to confirm the author's terms, which always take precedence.
How do I download a font?
Open any font page and click the Download button. You get a ZIP file containing the font files and, where available, a readme with the license.
How do I install a font after downloading?
On Windows, unzip the file, right-click the .ttf or .otf file and choose Install. On macOS, unzip the file, double-click the font file and click Install Font in Font Book. The font is then available in your apps.
What file formats do you provide?
Most fonts are supplied as TrueType (.ttf) or OpenType (.otf) files inside the ZIP. The format for each font is listed in the details on its page.
Why does the live preview not work for some fonts?
A small number of older fonts have damaged internal data that browsers refuse to render. When that happens the preview skips to a style that works and marks the broken ones. The download still works, and the font may install fine on your computer.
How often are new fonts added?
We publish 20 new fonts every day, so there is always something fresh to discover on the newest list.
Can I use these fonts on my website?
Often yes, using @font-face or a webfont service, but web embedding is a separate permission from desktop use. Check the font's license for web use before adding it to a site.
I own a font listed here and want it removed. What do I do?
We respect creators' rights. Send a removal request through our copyright page and we will act on valid notices promptly.
